Okay, noticing a trend.

Scarians, yall do not have to go "Sorry Grumbo shippers" all the time.

Yall should be able to talk about your ship, another ship, and potential ship dynamics, even if they're toxic, wo making one ship Seem Better or More Valid in such a way that you feel that you have to say "Sorry Grumbo shippers".

The "Sorry Grumbo shippers" honestly makes it seem more as if you're being purposefully anti-Grumbo than not.

Like if I were to say, "Sorry Scarian shippers, but Grian literally yelled in despair when Mumbo died in Wild Life. Like, yeah, I know Scarian are friends now, but he yelled and made a grave for Mumbo in the same episode and called him cute!!!" Then yall wouldn't like that either.

Both ships are valid. Both have some hella fun dynamics, and you can play around w both a lot.

But I hope you understand what I mean.

(And if what I'm saying isn't applicable to you, then you really don't have to give a damn about this post.)

Day 10: Mail

He’d heard the rumors from everyone else using the mail service. How Grian would probably overfill his mailbox with nonsensical things, obsessing over him.

What they didn’t realize, of course, was that Grian hadn’t sent him a thing yet.

Mumbo glanced at his freshly installed mailbox for the eighteenth time that day. Still no mail.

Of course, Grian was probably awfully busy with that permit office he’d created, and now that he had the prismarine permit, he was probably focused on making a farm for that as well.

Still, there was that itch. That ache in Mumbo’s heart. He hadn’t seen much of Grian in ages.

“Surely it wouldn’t hurt to send him a message?” Mumbo asked the open air.

He got no response. Not that he was expecting one, of course. Not that he was expecting an avian to chime in and call him something silly.

Or rather, an avian-fish hybrid? Mumbo knew that the shapeshifting capabilities he’d discovered in season 8 were still with him, but he hadn’t realized that sharing a soul with Grian would do anything to impact him. Certainly nothing on this scale.

Maybe Grian wanted the distance to get back to being himself again. Mumbo couldn’t blame him for that.

Writing out a message and sending it off was the best he could do, really. Except, when Mumbo went to fetch a stamp for Grian, he realized he didn’t have one. Odd.

Shaking his head, Mumbo put the letter in his pocket. There was a post office. Maybe he could just drop it off there for them to handle.

Pearl smiled at him when he arrived. “Well, hello there Mumbo!”

“Hi, Pearl. As postmaster, I’m guessing you know which mailboxes have been set up and which ones haven’t, right?”

“Certainly. What can I help you with?”

“I wanted to send Grian a letter.” Mumbo pulled the paper from his inventory, setting it on the counter in front of Pearl.

She examined it, but she did not unfold it. “I see. Well, Grian is one of the people who hasn’t asked for a mailbox yet. But I can definitely make sure this gets to him!”

“Thanks, Pearl. I appreciate it.”

“Of course, of course.” Pearl slipped the letter into her bag. “So, Mumbo. Just out of curiosity…”

“Yeah?”

“How has Grain been this season? You guys are neighbors, right?”

“Oh, erm. We are, sort of. I think he’s been okay? I mean, he’s certainly been busy, what with the fishing and the permit office.”

“The permit office! That’s right. I should ask him how that’s going when I deliver your letter.” Pearl nodded to herself. “Speaking of permits…”

“Yeah?” Mumbo looked at her, forcing himself to focus more intently on the conversation instead of the post office.

“I hear you and Grian have decided to share a permit?” Pearl pulled out a book, writing something down as she continued talking. “Wart blocks?”

“Oh! Yes, that’s right. I actually need to talk to him and discuss that, hence the letter.” Mumbo didn’t mean to lie to Pearl, but if he satiated her curiosity, she was probably less likely to read the letter and find out what Mumbo had actually written.

He didn’t want any other hermits to think he was desperate for Grian’s attention, after all.

“He’s always busy when you’re both online at the same time then, I’m guessing.”

“Just for a while, anyway.” Mumbo picked at a nonexistent seam on his jacket. “Well, it was nice talking with you, Pearl. But I really must be going.”

“Of course. Thanks for chatting with me, Mumbo. Feel free to stop in anytime!” Pearl waved him off cheerfully.

After Mumbo was out of earshot, Pearl laughed to herself.

“That man is down bad.”

I FORGOT TO POST MY GRUMBO MONTH 16 YESTERDAY so have it today instead

Day 16: sick character

Mumbo opened the door, balancing the groceries in his arms. As he went about putting things away, he heard shuffling coming from the bedroom.

“Mumbooooo!”

Grian’s voice carried down the hall, scratchy and tired.

Mumbo sighed, leaning out of the kitchen. “Stay in bed, G!”

A long and pouty whine came from the bedroom. “But I don’t wannnaaa!”

Mumbo rifled through the cabinets, grabbing a cup. “You need rest!”

As Mumbo poured water into the cup, more shuffling came from the bedroom.

“Grian— stay put!”

No answer but more shuffling. Mumbo looked down the hallway, as if checking for Grian. He went back to the kitchen, hemming and hawing over what to make for dinner. Some soup might be good…

Mumbo heard more shuffling, this time followed by footsteps, and he sighed again. When he turned around, he saw Grian standing there in the doorway, blanket wrapped snugly around himself.

“Grian…”

Grian sniffled, giving Mumbo a look like a kicked puppy. He was sick, and should have definitely been in bed— but Mumbo was absolutely defenseless against that look, and he quietly handed the cup of water to Grian.

Grian sipped on the water, watching Mumbo start making the aforementioned soup. “I’m cold.”

Mumbo looked over his shoulder. “I bet the bed’s warm.”

Grian grumbled, more blanket than he was person. “I don’t wanna lay in bed. It’s so lonely…”

“You just want me to come snuggle you, don’t you.”

“I want you to come snuggle me, yes.”

Mumbo put his hands up in mock surrender. “Okay, okay, you win. I’ll make food, then I’ll come join you, yeah?”

Grian looked pouty still. “I have to wait?”

Mumbo gave the other an exasperated look.

“Okay, okay, I’ll wait…”

Grian was grumbling as he walked off— Mumbo resolved to make dinner as fast as he could. He really was a sucker for Grian, but then again, he’d never bothered denying it.

Despite his best efforts, it was still about half an hour till dinner was ready— Mumbo carried the bowl to the bedroom, careful not to spill anything.

The lights were off and the curtains were closed, a Grian-sized lump in the middle of the bed.

“Hey, buttercup.”

A mumble in response.

“I brought soup.”

Grian didn’t move, and Mumbo just set his soup bowl on the bedside table.

“You took agessss…”

Mumbo giggled to himself, then crawled in bed with Grian. “I had to make dinner, mate. I went as fast as I could.”

Grian groaned, then rolled over to fit snugly into Mumbo’s arms. “Can’t believe you were late…”

Mumbo sighed, then kissed the top of Grian’s head. “If you get me sick, I’ll never forgive you.”

Mumbo heard a sleepy giggle in response. “Noooo.. I wouldn’t do that.”

Mumbo just shook his head, and resigned himself to the fact that he would likely wake up tomorrow feeling awful.

Back with another question and update-!

I had forgotten to mention, as part of the experimental nature of the Brackidarium, I had introduced that purple dragon goby, Grumbo, with a small fleet of Bumblebee gobies, spurred by first testing the predaciousness with acclimated feeder endlers, and finding him to be entirely neutral to small fish.

As of a year post introduction, Grumbo has not yet taken a soul (or sole, for that matter) and has, somewhat adorably, become the Bumblebee’s benificiary, them always following him in a close flock to snatch food particles exposed from his excavations.

Additionally, the horned blenny, stated by hobbyists to be territorial and aggressive to tankmates of similar or smaller size, has been overtly passive and inquisitive, going so far as to actively sharing a particular rock crevice den with the Mugilogobius Cavifrons “mangrove goby,”

Which itself is written to be a similarly semiaggressive and territorial species.

The reason I’m conveying these interactions is due to their shared aspect; defiance of stated “facts” from the hobby. Perhaps they could be exceptions, the individuals being abnormally friendly, or perhaps they aren’t, and the information is just plain incorrect- regardless,

This whole experiment originated from finding your profile, and becoming inspired to create the most varied community brackish tank possible, within reason of possible stocking density.

And as the project developed, it became a mythbusting endeavor for commonly stated but source-lacking information in the hobby.

What are some commonly stated things in the hobby you’ve found to be untrue, or case-by-case? And, is there anything you -suspect- to not be the case, or otherwise different to how it’s commonly written about?

Very cool! Thank you for the update! I loved my Dragon Goby for the several years I had him - definitely one of the oddest and therefore coolest fish I've ever kept. I highly recommend them.

Misinformation is a weird aspect of the hobby since it is so rampant in some circles, but I do find it hard to refute much of it just because, shamefully, my actual experience is limited (to a few dozen tanks over a few dozen years, but yknow it's still fewer data points than one might think). But below are a few things I think are pretty straightforward.

Aggression isn't well understood in the hobby. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that Mosquitofish were unrelenting bullies and nippers I'd have enough money to retire - but I've never seen them cause any damage across maybe 30 individuals I've kept. Likewise - I've been told Yellow Tailed Damsels are placid, but every specimen I've owned has been a real pain. I think it's a product of tank size (nightmare fish in my 29 gallon were angels when moved to a 125) and tankmates. Sometimes it's just per specimen - I have a GSP that's an angel in a tank with snails and hermits, but that's by far not the norm. I think it all needs to be taken with a grain of salt, even with baseline generalities.

I've found most medications to either be actively worthless (like melafix) or limited in use and have a hard time really recommending any of it. I tend to think prevention by keeping a clean tank and not taking risks with livestocking to be the only reliable way to fight illnesses.

Brackish tolerance is likely much wider and harder to quantify than I ever originally thought. Every source I've ever seen states duckweed is a freshwater only plant, but I have a growing population in my 1.003. Orange Chromides I've found can handle more salinity than people tend to think and some Damsels and Hermits tolerate way lower levels. I'm not saying that goldfish or angelfish can tolerate half strength sea water or anything, but I think this subject needs more experimentation and experiences should be given some consideration.

I've heard lots of horror stories of glass anemones/aiptasia in aquariums, but I've never had any issues with stung livestock in saltwater tanks. I think the issues are more with competition with other photosynthetic life and aesthetic value more than issues with fish or invertebrates.

What you're doing is great and I really enjoy it <3 I love the details you put into the characters clothes, the way you draw full bodies and the interesting poses you use, and from what I've seen from that post about ‘gh illustration i did last year for china gh only anthology project’, you’re really talented at colouring too!!! I love the softness of the clothes, and the fluffiness of their hair, I also like the angle with the fence (? The wood thing in front of them) and all the little flower petals!! (i adore flowers and pink is one of my favourite colours!!)

I am exited to see more in general, but what I would love to see more with Mumbo and Grian would be more colouring, (simple but colourful) backgrounds and cute facial expressions! ^w^

Obviously, do whatever you want, I am already enjoying following you <3 (and I'm sure you're very busy lately! So your priority with art should be having fun and relaxing!)

i love pastel colors so much, especially the pink aesthetic 🫶🫶 funfact: my circle name (in jp fandom, there’s 2 names used. one is circle name, like sort of publishing name?? and then there’s ther artist name) is 桜かぼちゃ/sakura kabocha which is basically combining my fav aesthetics, sakura with the spring stuff and cherry blossoms; kabocha is pumpkin in japanese, i like autumn and halloween as well

i love drawing, but as time goes, i gradually have less time and energy to put for a piece. full-render piece takes so long now 😭 my life also gets busier as well.

the truth is, i use the gradient style as a ‘cheat’ for myself, to make a piece looks finished without having to render much. my drawing process nowadays involves a lot of short-hands and how fast i can finish something with all my constraint. i do lineart fast, i jump from drawing blue abstract blorb into lineart right away. by doing that, i shaved quite a significant amount of time.

the gradient palette i use is specifically the ukiyo-e gradient palette, which is a gradient palette intended to mimic the japanese ukiyo-e painting style. i mess around with tonal after that and add more effect.

i got a lot of doujin drawing experience from my time in the gintama/ginhiji fandom, would love to one day make a full doujin comic for grumbo, but idk about my time and energy 😭

grumbo honestly have helped a lot with my artblock currently. i’m sort of in a creation rut with gintama since we’re in a waiting period until the new series. i hoard fandoms, so once i got it, i usually don’t ditch them out, especially if i’ve drawn arts of it, so i’m here to stay :>

reminiscing.

this is going to be an unedited rambling post about my feelings. these are just my opinions and should not be taken as an attack on anyone or their opinions.

i miss the old hermitcraft fandom. i miss season 6 and season 7 and a time when fics were hermitcraft, not shipping or dream smp crossovers. i miss longfics and having 7k results on ao3 instead of 14k. i miss when doctorsiren was a big name and when ATUS was the ultimate book of fanon watcher lore. i miss messy oneshots and i miss gen fics and i miss things that had actual horror elements, not just grumbo or scarian or whatever. i miss respecting boundaries and i miss waiting eagerly for the next chapter of my favorite fics to come out. i miss having authors i look up to. i miss having other long time fans to talk to. i miss having people to freak out over headcanons with. i miss when things werent just the same highschool au over and over again. i miss having authors that regularly post good quality fics. i miss the fandom all collectively coming together over a single popular fic. i miss when it felt like you had a million friends out there, just waiting to be discovered. i miss having fics written about more obscure hermits. i miss having fics written for fun, not just hits. im guilty of these things too. i know that. but i miss the old ways, and i know they were far from perfect and that i am just a man with rose colored glasses, but everything seemed so simple. so easy. i miss coming home from not having internet for a week and excitedly scanning the 3 new pages for updates of my favorite works. i miss filtering by hits or words and not getting grumbo smut. i miss it, i miss it so much, but its gone and i dont know what to do. i am a relic of an older time. i miss what it used to be and i know this is objectively better but i miss it so much like a pain right behind my heart in my chest and i dont know why but i do and it hurts. i miss my childhood and i miss project dirthouse and i miss not having to worry about shippers or extreme fans or any of that, and i miss it all so much, and i miss when finding another hermitcraft fan felt like finding a small treasure in the woods. i miss having a tight knit community instead of a loose vaguely connected sprawl of people. i miss it i miss it i miss

@sherwood-cabin yeah that's def one of the reasons I am very. ejhhghjgh and wanna block some ships. but also I'm just picky and blacklist shit i don't feel like seeing. like in the mha fandom i have bkdk blacklisted bc. i just don't like it lol. but yeah, it makes me uncomfortable to produce or consume ship content with cc's who have expressed discomfort with it (even if its just like. a post that jokingly calls pearl gem's gf and isn't really shipping them).

I won't stop people? as long as its like. you know. not put where they'd easily see it and it's properly tagged. I have friends who ship some more. ambiguous ones. (i.e. cc's who said they weren't comfortable but it wasn't clear if they were interpreting it as like. harassing them about every man they spoke to in their comment sections or like the way hermitshippers actually ship the characters and keep it away from the cc's) and it makes me uncomfortable but it tends to just be in private discord servers so it's less. of an issue than if it was on tumblr, ya know? but i still hate seeing it lol

but also just. not everyone uses that so like. sure there's a person in my notes who tags like "impulse ship" but that doesn't. carry over to every blog on my dash.

@orca-iguana god yeah. fuckin. i ship this one but kiribaku also has bakushima and krbk and dynariot and pop rocks and it's like. pick one. even if u want to see content for that ship you have to dig thru 5 tags and also tag 5 tags when you post. and like to talk about the reverse. Ethub's duo name is the same as its ship name. If you like ethubs /p but not ethubs /r but you don't dislike shipping entirely? you're screwed dude. no avoiding the ethubs /r. That's also flower husbands to an extent? but like. i think platonic flower husbands enjoyers are a lot less common and at this rate they should probably make a new tag for that lol.

@with-both-my-hearts I don't even know how you'd approach a standard. ship names are an art form frankly, and trying to like. make it boring and consistent is NOT worth it. Like. Scarian, Ethubs, Grumbo, Jizzie. basic ship names thats the ol' mashin' of names. but even then, who goes first and the overall sound of it is important to consider. Like take scarian. if you swap who's first and who's last you know what you get. "Grar". that fucking sucks. but also just like. I love funky ship names sometimes. for instance, flower husbands. that's such a nice name for it. "treebark" is fuckin clever. thanks @strifesolution for it i love it. attempting standardization would just suck the life outta it imo. and like. trying to enforce a "tag 'x/y' with the names in in alphabetical order" is basically impossible. it won't happen.

@marcooze It's not a super set in stone thing for me? like. I post a lot about Flower Husbands, obviously, I had that whole thing with Scarian (though like?? Scarian is hit or miss for me and its interest wanes half the time. You don't understand how distressed i was to become a scarian blog after posting a bunch of scarian. i posted ethubs that night too. why didn't ethubs have as much of a profound effect) Ethubs, are the 3 i like. follow the tags of? But i also enjoy a good Treebark/Jizzie/Nature wives post. and after Zed's. confession for beef? I've tried to get into Clethubs and Jausmajor. i did try. i prommy. they just didn't click v well for me. (I particularly didn't enjoy when people tried to make them 3 way relationships when it's like. what chemistry do those guys have. like yeah jausage and fh have their established dynamics but now you're trying to convince me of scott/sausage? etho and cleo i get a little more. but its still. why does it need to b a triangle is a v not enough for you /lh)

I know everyone loves to go "why does it need to be like this when it could be like this jimmy has two hands" but i'm sorry i like a little bit of unrequited angst occasionally. but i don't like it with my endgame ships. so they tend to be like. fuckin awkward third wheel situations. I used to watch miraculous ladybug and i did the SAME THING to chloe (she was my favorite. i decided she was in love with ladybug. however. ladynoir. and also chloe bullied marinette so i could never see them getting together. thus. unrequited chloebug)

I've noticed i seem to dislike Every Mumbo Ship. Sorry bestie i love u but you're banned from romance. illegal. i don't care how much of a whore you are, suggesting to kiss the southlanders, complementing grian's back, having a robot son with him, no sorry its a crime.

I am playing fuckin’ whack-a-mole with blacklisting ships in this fandom.

Thanks to 2019 the shipping community is like. Rebuilding itself and 3L/LL/Empires so new that means half the ships don’t have proper ship names yet and it’s impossible to block them all because every day a new one appears. Or people don’t tag it because they don’t know a ship name. And then they keep not tagging it bc no ship name. And then I see the same post over and over again because I can’t block it.

I am GLAD you’re having fun but oh my god let me block the posts I don’t want to see them I’m only “into” like a few of them (and I actively seek out even less. The rest are just ones I’m Okay With) and the rest squick me out 😔
